Hospital Pharmacy
Hospital pharmacists are in a unique position within the healthcare team. They are the experts
within hospitals on medicines and interact on a daily basis with all other healthcare
professions including, doctors, nurses and physiotherapists. They ensure that patients within
their hospital receive the appropriate medicines in the appropriate dosage form. The role of
hospital pharmacists is wide and varied and is expanding all the time. Some examples of
their expanding role is their involvement in the monitoring of complex chemotherapy regimens
in severely ill patients. They work with doctors and microbiologists to prevent resistance
developing to many antibiotics by monitoring the use of all antibiotics. Hospital pharmacists
are also involved in monitoring adverse drug reactions and errors in the medicine
use process.

Community Pharmacy The community pharmacist today is becoming the first port of call for many with general
ailments seeking help, advice and information. The role of the community pharmacist is
constantly evolving along with changes in society’s expectation of health professionals.
Pharmacists are no longer seen in the narrow traditional role of drug dispenser but rather that
of the medical information provider, including offering a range of services such as cholesterol
testing, and blood pressure monitoring, thus making the role of the community pharmacist
increasingly challenging and rewarding. The community pharmacist is the ‘scientist on
the high street’ being easily accessible and readily available to provide help and advice to all
of the community. The care and guidance provided by the community pharmacist is an integral
part of the modern healthcare system, providing a backbone of support to both the medical
and general community.
